Women and Language Publication Mission
Women and Language is an international, interdisciplinary research periodical affiliated with the Organization for the Study of Communication, Language and Gender, published by the Communication Department at George Mason University.
The mission of Women and Language is to provide a feminist forum for those interested in communication, language, and gender. W&L seeks to stimulate dialogue and inquiry centering on questions of how gender is constructed and how the processes of difference, dichotomy and hierarchy are involved in such gender constructions. It aims to uncover the interconnections among sex, gender, race, class, and heterosexual hegemony, examin-ing the role of symbolic communication, verbal and nonverbal, in those processes and connections, attending especially to the impacts of masculinist paradigms in communication.
Women and Language, a periodical that is both newsletter and journal, publishes peer reviewed research and theoretical articles, as well as essays, personal narratives and poetry. In its newsletter function, W&L welcomes submissions about work in progress, bibliographical material, and news. We seek information from conferences, magazines, newspapers, scholarly publications and correspondence from around the world. W&L wants contributions from all disciplines with interests in women and language. Interdisciplinary work is especially welcomed.
Except for book reviews, send three (3) copies of materials to be considered for publication to Anita Taylor, Executive Editor, Women and Language, Communication Department, George Mason University, Fairfax, VA 22030; or to the appropriate issue guest editor. Preferred length of manuscripts is 3,500 words, although either shorter or longer materials will be considered. Prepare materials with a separate cover page with no author identification on the manuscript itself; otherwise, use either MLA or APA style to guide format and referencing. Please include an abstract. For more information call (703) 993-1099 or write ATAYLOR@GMU.EDU via e-mail. W & L's ISSN # is 8755-4550. For book reviews, see below.
Protocol for Women and Language book reviewers
Women and Language reviews books of general interest to our readers, books that relate, in some way, to issues of communication, gender, and language, or to women and language. The book review editor solicits reviews from specific examiners as well as encourages unsolicited reviews. All reviews are published at the discretion of the editors, who edit for length and clarity.
Reviews should give readers of W&L a sense of what the book includes and evaluate what it contributes to anyone interested in communication, language, and gender. Reviewers are expected to be candid in their assessments but should express negative criticisms in a manner that is helpful rather than destructive.
Submissions: An electronic file of the review should be sent to Book Review Editor Patty Sotirin, Department of Humanities, Michigan Technological University. Her email address is pjsotiri@mtu.edu.
Length: Reviews should be approximately 750 words, unless the book editor has authorized a longer review for a particular book or has requested a review essay.
Style: Each review should be headed by name of author, title of book, name of publisher, and copyright data, followed on a separate line by the name and institutional affiliation (if any) of the reviewer. At the end of each review, the reviewer should include the price of the book, in both cloth and paper, if available, as well as the ISBN number, and an indication of reviewer’s rank and title. (E.g., Talking Back: Thinking Feminist Thinking Black by bell hooks is available from South End Press for $20.00, paperback; ISBN: 0896-08-3527. Reviewer Maria Smyth is an Assistant Professor of Communication at Cady Stanton University.)
